A Executor's Checklist for the First 30 Days of an Estate
By ALG Innovation Group · September 1, 2026
Why the first 30 days matter
The opening weeks of an estate set the tone for everything that follows. Acting promptly helps you preserve assets, meet statutory deadlines, and avoid personal liability.
Step 1: Secure the estate
- Locate the original will and any trust documents.
- Order certified death certificates (10–12 is usually enough).
- Secure the residence, vehicles, and valuables.
Step 2: Build an inventory
List every account, policy, and property you can find. Don't estimate values yet — just capture what exists.
Step 3: Notify the right parties
Notify Social Security, the decedent's employer, and any financial institutions. Open an estate bank account once you receive letters testamentary.
Keep a paper trail for every notice. Courts and beneficiaries will ask.
Step 4: Meet with counsel
An estate attorney helps you confirm jurisdiction, filing deadlines, and whether probate is even required. Many estates qualify for a simplified proceeding.
